That Dog Loves Dad More Than Food
By Rooney

Well, that may be a slight overstatement … but, I believe that Patches knows that she will not be overlooked by mom-D when it comes to grocery time!

Patches is a sweet, loving dog – always has been!  She is a little homelier than your average BC and her four wheel drive is busted … but, I truly believe she is eternally grateful for mom-D’s loving care and dad’s checkbook after that fateful January evening!  Really … I think she knows just how much she’s worth (she has a minimum anyway!)

Patches “Rides for the Brand”[i] absolutely – no question about it!  You even think about messing with either mom-D or dad (or any of us BC’s) you might think that Gall would be the BC to watch out for … wrong answer … Patches will become your worst enemy!  Now, come to get a trailer (or a TV or mom-D’s jewelry) heck, I imagine that Patches would help you load it … except for that dang opposable thumb issue that we explained previously.

Anyway, back to the theme … Patches started this little deal back when Annie and Bubba started eating solid food and became part of the “regular” family (not the “puppy” family).  In the evenings (typically around 9:30) when mom-D calls all of us in to supper, Patches holds back – gets up slow, does some extra stretches, etc. – and after everyone else skeedaddles off to their food bowls. Patch eases on over to dad and usually gets EXTRA loving for that attention.  Not only does she eliminate her competition, she also recognizes that dad realizes she is potentially jeopardizing (if only slightly) the opportunity for groceries!  That’s extra love – and and that’s what Riding for the Brand is all about – sacrifice, when, and if, necessary.

You try and take Patch away from “the place” and it’d be a mistake.  This is home, and home is where you hang your heart.  Patches wouldn’t leave this place for all the food and treats in the world.  Heck, I bet she wouldn’t even wanna leave even if it meant that her four wheel drive would be fixed!  She knows that she is loved, and here is where she loves others too!  The place, the people, and the pups!  Now, I imagine you know some folks too, that are thought to be “there for a long time” – you might think that they are riding for the brand … maybe you’re right, but maybe they are just there because …”they are a little more homelier that the rest” or “they don’t have four wheel drive”.  Think about it … just because somebody sticks it out through thick and thin doesn’t necessarily mean that’s because they believe in it through and through … and just because someone sticks it out through thick and thin doesn’t necessarily mean that they are homely and don’t have four wheel drive!

We’ve all got some buddies that are working way below their capabilities … but they’re pretty much happy and are staying put!  And, we know that there are some other folks that are kissing everybody’s gluteus maximi since they know that they can NEVER get another job as good as the one they’ve got!  I reckon that “Kissin Up”[ii] works in some places --- never has around this outfit though!

The latter makes the former, second guess themselves!  But, hopefully the former sees the good that they do, and … if they are treated ok … they’re comfortable.  Heck … maybe a few of the crazy ones think that they might even be able to change the messed up system and bring a breath of fresh air to the antiquated system.  These are the folks that are referred to as either the:  1) Troublemakers; or 2) Outside The Box Thinkers – depending on whether you’re homely or happy (irrespective of whether you have two, three, or four wheel drive)!

Of course, other packs can sometimes be after the former … I know that Patches has had her share of offers.  They are promising bigger and better everything … I mean – moist dog food on the weekends, Beneful® dog food during the week, and even canned food on the federally observed holidays.  Though these offers do make her feel good … and second guess herself at times … she thinks that she’ll just stay put – after all, that dog loves dad more than food, and it ain’t all about the money!!

[i] “Riding for the brand” was the code of the Wild West. According to famed Western writer Louis L’Amour, the expression meant “loyalty to a man’s employer or the particular outfit he rode for.” Today, most people think of a brand as a recognizable symbol burned onto the backsides of cattle. But in the Wild West, the actual expression of the brand was much more than just a mark to determine ownership of livestock. It was a symbol for those who lived and worked on the ranch—a visual representation of the values and principles they believed in.  http://www.respectfactor.com/2009/03/riding-for-the-brand-living-a-principled-life-at-home-and-on-the-range.html

[ii] to kiss-up:  to pay false flattery to another, particularly a superior at work, in order to get special attention.  http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/kiss-up
