Bromance[i]  … WTH!!!! (what the heck????)

By Rooney

EDITORIAL COMMENT:  This is a repost of an article written by Miss Roo back in March 2015.  Today is St. Patrick's day, but it is also the anniversary of Donald's death.  Always a mixed day for me - while he was around, Donald and I always shared a beer, or six, on St. Patrick's!

Here's a toast to friends old, and new - close and far!

Hope you enjoy the story!

None of us around this place had ever given much attention to that term before we saw that episode of “How The States Got Their Shapes” quite a while back!  Now, I don’t know what the kids have done to the meaning of that term now … but we’ve been thinking about the concept for quite a while now (this article has been four years in the writing – as of today) … yeah … Damn Good term we think!

“IT” was already in full bloom by the time that I came into the picture … so, I never really thought anything about it.  As far as I knew, it was just the way that things were, and were supposed to be!  They weren’t brothers … didn’t even know each other until the end of their college years – and even then, they ‘only knew each other’.  They met back up again in 1995, had a conflict with mutual interest … which became a cause … they formed a pretty special bond, and then they were pretty much inseparable.  You could generally look once, see one; look again, yeah, there’s the other.  If they didn’t see each other every day, they would visit on the phone.  Yeah, it WAS a Bromance.  But, it ended way too early … on March 17, 2011.

Kinda hard to imagine now why the bond stuck as hard and as fast as it did … the only real connections were work ethic and beer … guess that’s enough!!!!  Goodness knows that there was quite a bit of work done, and much more beer drank (the two activities consistently overlapped don’t you know!)!  The relationship started with the never ending pitchers at Sarah’s, while discussing work issues and just naturally migrated to all of the questions and ponderings on life and other mysteries.

In deference to our late ‘brother’s’ homophobic fears, he would prefer Aristotle's classical description of friendship which is often taken to be the prototype of bromance, and what he and dad shared … Aristotle wrote, around 330 BC, "It is those who desire the good of their friends for the friends' sake that are most truly friends, because each loves the other for what he is, and not for any incidental quality.”  It wasn’t the money … It wasn’t the trips to Vegas … wasn’t the building/engineering assistance or labor … or any other things which are none of your business to know anyway[ii] … they genuinely cared for each other!!!!  They comfortably enjoyed each other’s company.  Respected each other’s opinion (might not have agreed all the time, but respected – none the less.)  It was, in all aspects … a truly symbiotic relationship!!!!  It might sound silly, but a Bromance is just what it was … in the strictest definition, they were buds and they had major plans for the future.

But other things came up … the plans got turned upside down … we know that several other folk’s plans were messed up too, some sincere … some, not so much.  No one knows why it happened … many of us have questioned it --- no answers have been found, and there will be no answers in this life, as we know it.  I have to think that there is some sort of master plan … some blueprint that we’re not privy to, yet.  Hey … we’re just along for this ride.  We can (and should, to some degree) lament the past, but we have to keep a firm grip on the future … REALLY!  Just because a life on earth has ended, we’ve still got a role to play, and play it we must … play it as hard and as fast as we can!!  He would have!

Bromance 1

We have lives … folks expecting of us … other folks to meet and more of our own dreams to fulfill!  We can’t get it done sitting on the couch feeling sorry for ourselves and eating bon-bons!

Besides, we’ve got other bromances in place (not at all to replace … but, in addition to).  The wife of one of dad’s doesn’t even question it … it just is, and has been, and will be!  The other “new” wife (love you AMC!) might still be a little jealous and asks “Is it your ‘girlfriend’ calling[iii]?” … but I think she’s ok with it too!  Ronny and David are cool!  Hey, after all, we have serious bromances going on here!  Life does go on!!!!  We have to let it, and work with it!  We owe it to our Brothers!

Well, I was just about to close out this article when Annie pointed out that there may be some of ya’ll still snickering about the idea of a bromance and while I won’t repeat what she said, I will clarify Bromance for you ... listen carefully now ...:  It is like a best friend, also referred to as BFFs, or even "besties."  These are people who you are very close to, and who you spend a great deal of time with (even if only on the phone, or texting!).  They are the first person you call when you're excited, hurt, or just want to chat.  Best friends can often feel like family because they are there for us during the most important moments in our life.  Some examples of bromances with famous people seem to include Hank Williams, Jr./Kid Rock, and Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw.  We can also have Galmance’s too …. Love those Pistol Annies … wish they were still together!!!

This has me thinking – is it possible to have a bromance threeway … Dad, Donald and Roosevelt?  Hmmm, that sounds a little too odd to say out loud, doesn’t it?!  Well, based on the stories that I’ve heard, I think that Roosevelt was just a fluffer[iv]!  He was their Bartender after all (you know … kept them ready to go!!!!)

Yeah, in any event, it WAS a bromance – I imagine that ol’ Donald is just turning over in his grave thinking about the potential jokes that could have been (and were) made about this ….

Heaven is beautiful from here … I hope it’s just as beautiful up there, my friend!

Bromance 2

[i] Bromance is a portmanteau of the words bro or brother and romance.  Editor Dave Carnie coined the term in the skateboard magazine Big Brother in the 1990s to refer specifically to the sort of relationships that develop between skaters who spent a great deal of time together.

[ii] “Well, I know you like a brother.

And I know you as well.

There's some things we could talk about, some things we'd never tell.

A few things in particular, an episode or two.

I could write a book about you.”

Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, I Could Write A Book About You

[iii] “I ain’t drinking alone …

I’m on the phone with my brother!”

Max Stalling, I Ain’t Drinking Alone

[iv] If you think you know what it means ... you REALLY have to read THIS definition -
